Mountain climbing, rock climbing
The Central Hills of Sri Lanka have, for centuries, captured the imagination of travellers from around the island and across the world take a look at the mountains and the rocks.
Hiking and trekking
Sri Lanka is a very special hiking destination. There are trails for all levels of experience, from easy walks to more intense treks. Sri Lanka also has over 400 waterfalls, a visit to which is included in plenty of hikes. Here are some of the best hiking and trekking trails in Sri Lanka.
Biking and motorbiking
You’re never far from a place where you can hire bikes and motorbikes – the difficulty is in finding the right ones. We can arrange for you to get mobile with the right guys in terms of safety and support (should you need it). You’d need to have your driving licence with you for a motorbike, of course. You could decide to take a day tour from your hotel, or to get to your next destination by bike – just let us know. And if you want to see how a couple of hard-core world bikers enjoyed cycling around the island on a shoestring budget.
Diving and snorkeling
Sri Lanka may not be the first place you think of to explore coral reefs and historic wrecks that teem with exotic creatures, but there are many places where you can do just that, with the help, if you need it, of some world-class diving centres and schools dotted around the island. And of course, we can fit it in to your dream holiday. The idyllic coastal town of Unawatuna is not only well known for its picturesque beach and bay, but also for offering some truly amazing diving adventures. Many of the reefs off Unawatuna are within easy reach of the shore and feature vibrant marine life like triggerfish, blue ring angelfish, barracuda, moray eels, whale sharks and pufferfish. The Tango Wreck (probably the SS Orestes that sank in 1875) and a century-old British steamer 'The Rangoon' are two popular wrecks to explore. Take a look here to whet your appetite.
Surfing
Sri Lanka has two distinct surfing seasons, one on each side of the island. November to April brings morning offshore winds to the western side, centred around Hikkaduwa, where beach and reefs dominate. May to October brings the same conditions to the east centred on Arugam Bay. Here the occasional reef and a profusion of long sand points offer consistent waves from the same swells which regularly sweep up the Indian Ocean from the Roaring 40s. Sea temperatures remain steady at about 27ºC (81ºF) year-round. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve never surfed before, or you’re a regular at Fistral Beach, we can arrange for your dream holiday to include a great surfing experience. Take a look 5 best beaches in Sri Lanka.
Trains
The train network of Sri Lanka was built in the nineteenth century primarily to transport products to the ports (principally Colombo), and many remarkable feats of Victorian engineering were needed to cope with the island’s terrain. You don’t have to be interested in the history of railways to appreciate the spectacular views of this country that only a train journey can provide. If you want to take what is regarded by many as the “most beautiful train journey in the world”, from Ella to Kandy, we could of course incorporate it into your trip. Take a minute to take a look at this Ella to Kandy trip.
Galle International Stadium
If you are a lover of cricket, you could take in a game, depending on when you visit. And there is nowhere quite like the ground in the city of Galle. And there is nothing the Sri Lankans look forward to more than a visit by the England XI. It’s been called the most picturesque test-match venue in the world, situated near Galle Fort and fringed on two sides by the Indian Ocean. If this is your thing, take a look at your cricket calendar and add it to your dream, and we’ll arrange tickets. See more about the Galle Stadium.
