The idyllic coastal town of Unawatuna is not only well known for its picturesque beach and bay, but also for offering some truly amazing diving adventures. Many of the reefs off Unawatuna are within easy reach of the shore and feature vibrant marine life like triggerfish, blue ring angelfish, barracuda, moray eels, whale sharks, and pufferfish.
Napoleon Reef, with its rocky outcrop, is home to Napoleon wrasse, and Galapita Gala and Goda Kupatha, with their distinctive coral varieties, are amongst the diving hotspots. The Tango Wreck (probably the SS Orestes that sank in 1875) and a century-old British steamer 'The Rangoon' are two popular wrecks to explore.
A diving licence is needed, but there are many dive centres where you can get the required PADI training and certification.
